The Eklingji Temple, located about 22 km from Udaipur in Rajasthan, is one of the most revered temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. This ancient temple holds immense religious significance and is considered the ruling deity of the Mewar dynasty.
Historical and Mythological Significance
Eklingji Temple was originally built in 734 AD by Bappa Rawal, the founder of Mewar. Over the centuries, the temple has been restored and renovated by various rulers. The Sisodia Rajput kings of Mewar considered Eklingji as their guardian deity, and they ruled the region as his regents.
Architectural Grandeur
The temple, made of marble and sandstone, showcases stunning Rajasthani and Indo-Aryan architecture. The temple complex consists of 108 small temples, adorned with intricate carvings and sculptures. The main sanctum houses a magnificent four-faced black marble idol of Lord Shiva, symbolizing his omnipresence. The idol is about 50 feet tall, with each face representing different forms of Shiva. A silver snake and a silver yoni (base) surround the idol, enhancing its divine aura.
Religious Importance
Eklingji Temple is an important pilgrimage site for Shaivites (followers of Lord Shiva). The Monday prayers and Shivratri celebrations attract thousands of devotees. The temple priests perform aarti and rituals with great devotion, creating a deeply spiritual atmosphere.
